Saint Francis and the gift of the stigmata
In 1224, on Mount La Verna, Saint Francis of Assisi experienced one of the most mysterious and sublime moments of Christian spirituality.
Having withdrawn into the silence of prayer and fasting, after a long time of interior trial and meditation on the Passion of Christ, he had the vision of a crucified seraph.
At the completion of this mystical experience, the stigmata appeared on his body: the marks of the nails in his hands and feet, and the wound in his side.
Franciscan tradition recognizes in this event the seal of its full union with the crucified Christ.
Since then, La Verna has remained a place of remembrance, asceticism, and silence, preserving the memory of an ardent love consummated in the mystery of the Cross.
In this Antiquus edition, the spiritual power of the scene is further enhanced by the manual application of 23-karat gold to selected details of the image. Gold is not a simple ornament: it becomes light, a symbolic material, a visual revelation of the sacred.
His presence lights up the composition, amplifies its solemnity and gives the work a luminous and precious quality, capable of conveying all the contemplative depth of medieval art.
The stigmata constitute the theological and emotional heart of the entire depiction. They are not merely the memory of an event that occurred in 1224, but the visible manifestation of Francis’s sanctity, his conformity to the suffering Christ, and the culmination of his mystical experience.
In questa immagine, la miniatura medievale trasforma quell’evento in una visione di raccoglimento, silenzio e trascendenza, mentre l’intervento in oro 23 carati ne rafforza il carattere sacrale e ne accresce il fascino collezionistico.
The result is a work of strong visual elegance and profound symbolic value, designed for those seeking not only a high-quality reproduction, but a presence capable of uniting art, spirituality, light, and prestige.
A liturgical sheet from the Italian 13th century
The work derives from a sheet of a gradual, the large choral book used in the medieval liturgy, in which historiated initials introduced the texts of the sacred chant.
In this context, the image did not have a merely decorative function, but became a visual and spiritual threshold, capable of accompanying reading, singing, and celebration.
Questa origine conferisce all’opera un valore ulteriore: non solo immagine da contemplare, ma testimonianza viva della cultura figurativa e religiosa del Duecento italiano.
Rinaldo da Siena e la luce dell’oro
Attributed to Rinaldo da Siena, an artist active around 1270, the miniature expresses with rare finesse the essential characteristics of 13th-century Sienese painting: compositional balance, narrative essentiality, spiritual intensity and the use of gold as symbolic light.
The original is dated around 1275 and is preserved at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, with shelfmark Ms. 71.
In this Antiquus edition, the rigor of fine art reproduction combines with premium craftsmanship, transforming the image’s historical value into a highly fascinating decorative and collectible presence.
Hand-applied 23-karat gold
One of the most distinctive elements of this edition is the manual application of 23-karat gold on selected details of the work.
This artisanal intervention gives relief, luminosity and depth to the composition, giving the miniature a visual intensity that recalls the precious language of medieval sacred art.
Gold makes each piece more alive, more solemn and more precious, accentuating the perception of uniqueness and the value of the work as a whole.
Handcrafted gold frame, ready to display
The print is offered with a pre-assembled gold handcrafted frame, designed to enhance the visual richness of the image and make it immediately ready to hang.
È una soluzione ideale per chi desidera un’opera completa, capace di arredare con eleganza uno studio, una biblioteca, un ambiente di rappresentanza o uno spazio dedicato alla devozione.
The dimensions of the work with frame are approximately 63 × 79 cm, while the folio measures approximately 37 × 53 cm.
